Their goal is for community members to develop autonomy by shifting from consumers to producers while connecting their personal growth to community resilience.
The Yisrael Family Urban Farm (YFUF) located in South Oak Park, Sacramento was founded in 2012 by Judith and Chanowk Yisrael. First starting as a journey to transition their family to a plant based diet has now grown into a grassroots organization that envisions urban agriculture as a tool for individuals to become agent makers of their own social change.
YFUF primarily engages the affected communities of South Oak Park through their Urban Roots Initiative. The Urban Roots Initiative currently includes a Garden Build program which provides residents with a garden at no cost to them, a summer youth mentorship program called Project G.O.O.D (Growing our own destiny) and lastly Edible Education, which focuses on providing educational programming for people to learn culinary, herbal and food preserving skills.
